Andy Yarrow

Having studied at UCL and Cambridge University, Andy Yarrow began his teaching career in the London Borough of Brent in 1991. Since then he has held a variety of posts including Head of Geography, Head of Sixth Form, Head of 14-19 Education and Deputy Headteacher, before being appointed as Headteacher of Hornsey School for Girls in Haringey in September 2004. In May 2007, Hornsey School for Girls was judged as 'Outstanding' by Ofsted for the first time.

Since April 2008, Andy has been Principal of Chelsea Academy, having been appointed four terms in advance of the Academy's opening in order to recruit students and staff and design the Academy's ethos, operational systems and curriculum. Chelsea Academy was also judged as 'Outstanding' by Ofsted in its first inspection in July 2011.

Andy has a high profile role amongst Headteachers in London, serving as Chair of the London Headteachers' Steering Group for the Specialist Schools & Academies Trust from 2007 to 2010, as a member of the SSAT's Academy Principals' Steering Group since 2009, as a London Representative on the Association of School and College Leaders Council from 2007 to 2011 and now a National Representative. He is also a member of ASCL's Executive Committee and Chair of the Association's Education Committee.

Andy is an accredited leadership coach and has been involved in delivering a wide range of school improvement, leadership training and coaching programmes, including Future Leaders and the National College's Associate Headteacher programme. He currently coaches participants studying for the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) and is engaged in the Tomorrow's Heads programme and is a Professional Partner for newly appointed headteachers.

Andy is interested in learning from best practice in schools within the UK and beyond, having visited schools in New York, Beijing, Athens, Denmark and the Netherlands in recent years. He is also a strong advocate for student leadership in schools and curriculum co-construction and has helped to develop related innovations within schools across London and beyond.
