the london diocesan board for schools
The London Diocesan Board for Schools is a leading sponsor of academies in London; Chelsea Academy is our fifth and our third brand new secondary school in as many years. Our expertise in sponsoring academies has been built on our experience in our 17 secondary schools which are amongst the best in London. Chelsea Academy is the first in which we have been joined by the local authority as a co-sponsor – another innovation where we have led the way.

In all, there are around 150 Church of England schools situated in the Diocese of London. These London Diocesan schools play a vital and increasingly valued part in educating around 45,000 children and young people of London from all backgrounds and traditions.

Church schools stretch the length and breadth of the London Diocese:, from Tower Hamlets in the east, to parts of Surrey in the west, and Harrow and Barnet in the north, covering 18 local authorities. Wherever you are, there is a Church school not far away.

Standards are high in the majority of these schools. Whether you look at examination results, popularity with parents, Ofsted inspection reports or just what people say, Church schools come out well. But important as these things are, they are not the sum total of education. We believe that achieving a good education and a good school is about the heart as well as the head. It seeks to build character alongside the curriculum. As well as the here and now, it deals with times past and times to come. A good school gets pupils to examine the big questions in life – questions of belief, of values of right and wrong.

Of course every school has a set of values and beliefs that it stands for and puts before pupils. The distinctive feature of church schools is that their values and beliefs are rooted in the Christian faith and understanding of life. At the core of these beliefs is the message that every child is unique and created in the image of God and that the 2000 year old example and message of Christ can be the foundation for living – even in the twenty-first century.
